Week of March 21st

Hope all of you enjoyed the March Break week off school and managed to keep dry with all the rain we had. We have two short weeks ahead but they are packed with events.

Before March Break we attended the Toronto Public Library - Parkdale Branch to participate in a Water of the World activity provided by Engineers Without Borders. Students were required to create a water filter using specific directions and materials. Each group was assigned a country to represent and purchased items using a set amount of money that represented that country's purchasing power. The results and discussion that followed provided some insight into the challenges some countries face with regards to accessibility to clean water.
Here are some photos:

We also had a visiting artist from Blank Canvasses who taught a lesson on Graffiti art. Students then created their own "tag" using the strategies she demonstrated. I think they turned out great!

SUMMER SCHOOL FORMS DUE THURSDAY!!
If you have a summer school form please return it by Thursday, March 24th. Summer School will be held at Parkdale this summer.

Math
We will complete our unit on Rate, Ratio, Percent and Proportional Relationships this week. You can expect a test on Thursday.
Here's the anchor chart for solving scale ratios:

History
Most of the history lessons have been assigned on days that I've been absent. We will review the work that has been previously assigned and ensure everyone's notebook is up to date.
Grade 7 - Hierarchy of New France
Grade 8 - Life in the Colonies

Science
We will continue working on our EdAppHack App development. Our focus will be creating paper prototypes and beginning to write our Dragon's Den "pitches". A permission form will go home next week for our presentation day on Tuesday, April 5th. Time is racing away from us and we'll spend much time next week on completing the prototypes, pitches and some coding. I'm very exciting to share your amazing app ideas on April 5th!!

Language
We will read an article on the politics of the American election. Hopefully it will help you make some sense of the differences between Canadian and American elections!
